How to Care For Your Glass Shower Door

A glass shower door looks awesome, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s tinted, clear or glazed. Having said that, you do need to take care of it regularly to keep it looking its best and to ensure it functions properly. There are also a few things you need to avoid doing in the process.

What to Do

To start with, make sure that you wipe down the door after every use. You can either use a cloth or squeegee that you keep in the bathroom. This goes a long way towards maintenance.

After a shower, leave the door open for a little bit. Not doing so leads to trapped moisture, and this leads to mold and mildew in your bathroom, especially on the ceiling. If you have a fan in your bathroom, run it for about half an hour after every shower. This helps with mold and mildew as well.

It’s important to clean both the door itself and the track it’s on. You don’t have to buy any fancy cleaners. In fact, a mixture of baking soda and water mixed into a paste will remove stains. For regular cleaning, white vinegar works just fine, and it kills the beginnings of mold and mildew.

If you’re considering putting in a new shower door, definitely do your research first to find a company that knows what they’re doing. If the door or seal is not installed correctly, water could leak out of your shower, into the floor and damage the wood beneath.

What Not to Do

Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on your door. They may not cause any visible damage immediately, but they will over time. Your door does need to be cleaned on a regular basis, however. Ignoring it will lead to unsightly problems. Cleaning the door once a week is about the right amount.

If you have trouble remembering to clean, put up a little checklist somewhere in the bathroom. Also, inspect the door seal itself to make sure that it’s not loose or leaking.

Never slam a shower door! They’re made of glass after all, and you don’t want the hardware to loosen or the door to shatter. Additionally, never hang on the door handle or put weight on it. Some people consistently hang wet towels on handles, and this causes stress over time. Try to avoid doing this.

A lovely glass shower door is a huge upgrade from a dingy curtain. Take proper care of your glass door, and it will serve you well for years to come.
